News Meet the Cambodian team players who will represent their country at the 11th annual Homeless World Cup

Lek Chhunmalivy has been attending the HFCA program since 2007 and every year has seen Cambodian teams fly around the world to represent their country at Homeless World Cups.

Last year he was selected to go to the Homeless World Cup in Mexico City but with two days to go we had to tell him the devasting news that he could not go as we could not afford to pay for his flight. Tears were shed and everyone was upset. Football can be a cruel sport. We told him to keep coming to our program and he could go to Poland if he trained hard and rather than give up he kept fighting and every week he showed up and earned his place in the team. Read his story in his own words below.

Life story/Family background: I was born and growing up in Phnom Penh and I am living with mother who is working as a staff-volunteer in Riverkids Foundation Project (RKF). My parents divorced since I was 5 years old. I dropped off my education since grade 6 for my mother not able to support me to the school. Since I dropped my school I worked as a worker somewhere in Phnom Penh for earning some money to support family. Since April 2013, I was sent by RKF to take a short course of Motorcycle repairing and the course will finished in October, 2013 then I hope I will have a better job after the course.

Joined HFCA:I have sent to HFCA program since late 2007 by Riverkids Foundation Project (RKF). Thank you very much to HFCA program and who else in helping me in playing football in the right way because before I came to HFCA, I played football in public, no field, no coach and gears.

The 2013 Homeless World Cup: I have disappointed last year that I have selected as a reserved player for the 2012 Homeless World Cup in Mexico City and I didn’t go for the money limited. For this time I am so happy that I have been selected again for the 2013 Homeless World Cup in Poznan, Poland. I am waiting and see that I have chance to go or not. However, I am playing harder for presenting my country in the world. I am ready in getting some good experiences from people in the Homeless World Cup event in August and will sharing their experiences to my nation when I am back.

Position: I played as a role of attacker/Forwarder.

Favorite Team: Manchester United is my best team.

Favorite Player:Rooney is the most players that I like.

HFCA Partner Organization: Riverkids Foundation Project (RKF).
